Bowyer Pro Tip: Avoid This Critical Handle Design Mistake

Complimentary fades are the secret to a robust and functional handle. The fades are probably the most misunderstood part of the bow. In my tutorials this is the part the most people have struggled to get right. I hope this helps to fill in the gaps and clear up any confusion. Let me know if you have any more questions!

PVC Recurve Bow: Full Tutorial (55 Pounds at 32")
Thank you for the awesome video! I've made one out of oak and am super happy with it 😁 I would like to make a recurve aswell, how do I apply this to making a recurve bow? Thanks!
@@simonjansson9903 Check out swiftwood bows for recurve tutorials. I have some recurve build alongs but they’re not tutorials. See my other videos in the beginner essentials playlist for broad topics that will help with any self bow
Cool vid Thank you
I made a mistake with my measurements, and the width of my board is only 1.37 inches (3.5cm) wide. I'm going for a lower draw weight, but I wanted to know if the limb taper should be any different to compensate? Or would the 10 inches be ok?
@@magnidroid Shouldn’t matter too much. I might keep the bow parallel for a little longer with a slimmer bow. Maybe go for 8” instead
Your content is amazing Dan ! Thank you 🙏
Love your stuff man !!!! So happy I found it . Every aspect is great .
Awesome video, out of curiosity, is there a reason you don't use a straight edge or some other tool when you're tillering to determine bend? I've seen other bowyer videos like Kramer who use a "tillering gizmo" (ua-cam.com/video/wGd2zxi-zTE/v-deo.html). Is there some trade off, or is it just because you have asymmetric limbs? Your method seems like it takes a lot of skill, as a complete beginner the tillering gizmo seems attractive so that I don't accidentally create a bend or run into other obvious issues you would catch by eye, but I may not. Do you think it's a better idea for a first time bowyer to use the gizmo or eyeball it? Is there a tradeoff or some performance I would be missing out on by going that route?
@@rdwind7734 The gizmo marks out a circle, whereas most bows call for a more elliptical tiller shape. So you have to mentally account for this and tiller the outer limbs more than the gizmo tells you. Too circular a tiller is better than no tiller at all, so the gizmo can be handy for beginners but will never get you a particularly good tiller. See my tillering video for a lot more about this and some alternative methods that may help you see the tiller
@DanSantanaBows I see, that makes sense I hadn't realized most were elliptical, I'll give those tillering videos of yours a look and research a bit more into limb shape. I greatly appreciate the reply, thank you!
What is the length of the stick pls?
@@firstgear11382 See the notes in the video or my site. 4-6 ft depending on your desired draw length
@@DanSantanaBows thank you, sure I will visit your website
Distributing the bend away from Over stressed areas to underatressed areas - Wow thanks. I have made 27 bow's till date and so appreciative for this nugget of info. Great nature footage as well. Thank you Dan
Try backing the bow. Youll get alittle more power out of it. The paiutes in the owens valley used sinue, rawhide, snake skin etc on juniper bows. The yumans made desert willow bows that were also backed.
@@AZ762SHOOTER See my comments about backing in the video the back of the bow, 6 ways. If i’m going to back a bow I’ll do it from the start
Its gonna take an hour to do the work
As I heard a great bowyer say at one point, 'if you ain't breaking them, you ain't making them'. After ten years of general wood wrighting, and four years of bowyer, I find that to be true...
At 5:43, is the measurement of the handle and stave 1.5 inches high? Or is the stave and handle a combined 3 inches? I ask because the board I have is 1.5 inches thick and it would be convenient to not have to glue the hable and have one solid piece (if this would work) Thanks!
@@keithmerritt743 Yep each board is .75” thick for a total of 1.5. If you have a thicker board no need to glue a riser. The process will be more similar to making a split stave bow
Excelente Dan!!! siempre agradecido por hacerme parte de este viaje!
This is a very unique and informative video, thanks Dan
a primordial question that I have not seen discussed in this level of depth!!! Again you and your cousin make UA-cam better than Netflix!!!
Great video! I'm not an archer but your vids are interesting and informative. Maybe I can pick this up as a hobby
Beautiful Bows. My favorite bow is a well-made bush long bow self-bow Rules . Very well explained.
Honestly there's just something so cool looking about an exaggerated asymmetric
Now that looks comfy on the cheeks!!
Dan uploads a video and I waste no time!
Great video as always! Ive been making bows for over 20 years and have never heard any one explain tiller as "having no idea where the bow will break" talk about a light bulb moment! That is the simplest and most intuitive way of thinking about tiller I've ever heard. Absolutely love that. I'm teaching a group of young men how to make a bow right now and they will be slowly working their way through their first staves on and off over the next month. I will be stealing this concept when we get to the tillering stage. Thank you!

Beautiful video! Though I do have a question: when you lay out an off-center handle on a traditional western recurve bow, do you adjust the point of recurve/degree of recurve of the shorter limb so that it, in terms of proportion, resembles the longer limb? This same question might also apply to designs like the Mollegabet: do you adjust the lever length between the two limbs if you choose to feature an off-center handle?
@@khoatran-pc6tb It could make sense to, but I’ve never done this. Practically speaking it doesn’t matter all that much. I do tend to make the top limb narrower and the bottom limb wider. I also use the wider bottom part of the stave for the bottom limb
I make the proportions the same, that way its easier to get the tiller I'm looking for, and so I avoid more set taking place in the bottom limb. To clarify, if the recurve makes up 30% of the top limb, then I make it 30% of the bottom limb. But it isn't that much different. For example, if the top is 30" with 10" of it being recurve, then bottom is 1" shorter at 29", with 9.66" or 9-11/16" recurves. It isn't necessary as long as you distribute the stress evenly for both limbs, but I find its easier to do so if proportions are kept the same on top and bottom. I do this for working and non-working recurves. Like DanSantanaBows said, you could also make the bottom a bit wider, and probably should, to take on the additional stress of shooting off center. Ultimately, the end result at full draw matters, and how much set the bow takes on each limb will tell you if you have done something wrong.
You're a artist my friend. Nuff luv from the UK 💛
@@Free-Bodge79 Thanks from across the pond!
Great explanations!
@@VSci_ thanks! let me know if there are any lingering questions
I was wondering if it makes a difference that on the steppe type recurve bows the tips were flattened perpendicularly to the rest of the bow and often hold straight by applying antler or bone onto this tips. Obviously it was important for them that the siyahs of the bow won't bend, which provided a higher speed of propulsion to the arrows I suppose. Would the tips that you make here bend, or do they just marginally participate in the bending of the bow because you curved them artificially?
@@petrapetrakoliou8979 Steppe bows are much shorter because of the horn sinew design. And so longer siyahs are really necessary. In order to keep mass down the siyahs are better off being thick and narrow. This is possible since this part of the bow is non bending The recurves I made here are more about improving string angles while adding minimal mass. This is a common style for vintage flight bows. Both designs suit the material. That said you will see lever tips in many wooden designs, particularly the mollegabet bows
Always impressed with your videos and skill. Thank you.
Beautyfull
dude this music is amazing, bow too.
I have some 1000lb dynema cord, is there a reason not to use it as a tillering string?
Is it possible / advised to carve an arrow rest into the handle of this bow?
@@keithmerritt743 Possible, but emphatically not advised. i admit this is mostly a taste thing, but a cutout shelf is also one of the most common points of failure for beginner bows. Copying dimensions of modern handles is risky-they usually have risers laminated in a way to handle narrower arrow passes. I always suggest adding an arrow rest rather than cutting out a shelf. See my beginner playlist for a tutorial. If you have arrow flight issues, this is better managed by choosing the right spine and narrowing the arrow pass if necessary.
Has any one used a pear tree for a bow? I had to take one down last year and it has been set aside to dry.
This is unbelievably informative! Thankyou for this knowledge.
Really awesome video, very helpful. I am attempting my first bow soon. Thank you.
I love the finish! My daughter's is named after the corn flower but in a different language. I want to make a kids bow for her with this finish ❤
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I would love to take one of your classes if you are still teaching
Those arrow looks groegeous!!
And Hour My Ass!! Really cool informative video but still this going to take longer than a hour. 😂
if you hang out with many bowyers you will see that making such a simple bow this fast is very standard and not really pushing it. I had less than an hour of footage and I filmed the whole build. With filming included it took longer of course since I had to set up the shots.
What timber is it?
